Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging exam that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to collect detailed information about the organs and tissues of the body.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete registration.
Please follow any instructions given by your healthcare provider.
Since MRI uses a magnetic field to obtain images, it is necessary to take precautions. Please review the MRI metal-safety checklist.
Wear comfortable clothes without metal fasteners, including zippers, buttons and snaps.
Most MRI exams take 15-20 minutes.
You will be positioned on a cushioned table inside the MRI scanner. The scanner will make a drumming sound as it captures the images. You may listen to music to muffle this sound if you’d like. To ensure the best quality images, you will be asked to remain as still as possible during the exam. Your exam may require an injection of IV contrast material. Images will be taken before and after the contrast material is injected.
We offer light sedation that can be taken before your exam.
Please note: When receiving sedation, you must bring a driver with you, as you will be unable to drive for 12 hours after your exam.
In addition, we have MRI scanners with larger openings (called “Open” MRI) that allow for more space between the body and scanner.
Your images will be interpreted by one of our board-certified radiologists. The findings will be sent to your healthcare provider, who will then contact you to discuss the results.
You may resume regular activities immediately after your exam.
