Dr. Ellen Abeln recognized for community leadership in breast care and cancer screening

Nov 17, 2015

Congratulations to Dr. Ellen Abeln, FACR, recipient of the Richard C. Travis Community-Based Physician Leadership Award from Mercy Hospital. This award recognizes the great service she provides to her patients, her peers and the public.

Dr. Abeln is passionate about providing the best breast care to the women in our region. She is selfless in supporting community and professional education about breast cancer screening and care. She is recognized for her clinical excellence and professional leadership. She is also an extremely caring provider, and sought after by patients who value her gentile care.

As she found herself specializing in breast care, Dr. Abeln had a vision, ahead of her time, of offering complete mammography services in a quiet, calm, private environment that catered to a woman’s physical and emotional needs; in March 2003, The Breast Center of Suburban Imaging was born.

Dr. Abeln created a haven for women to have a supportive, positive experience. More than that she has created a comprehensive breast program. The Breast Center is more than a place where mammography takes place. Women from all over the region who have a positive screening mammogram come to The Breast Center to obtain diagnostic workup. This is more than additional imaging, but includes real-time decisions about what modalities to use, discussion with patients about what their concerns are, and pathology follow-up to ensure the correct diagnosis is made. This is the definition of patient-centric care.

Dr. Abeln is a founding member of the Breast Board of Unity and Mercy Hospitals and is currently the co-chair of the Allina-wide Breast Program Committee (BPC), as well as the member of the newly formed Allina Mammography Leadership Council. In addition, Dr. Abeln is the Medical Director of Mammography for Suburban Imaging – Blaine and 16 additional sites (local and outstate), overseeing all credentialing and quality assurance measures for these sites.

Dr. Abeln has been a tireless advocate for women's health. She has presented numerous professional and community talks on breast care. Her expertise is recognized by her colleagues; she is a perennial "Best Doctor for Women" winner. Dr. Abeln provides the kind of passionate care, professional leadership and humble service that the Travis Award celebrates.
