Interventional radiology (IR) is a specialized area of medicine focusing on minimally-invasive, targeted treatments to provide patients with maximum relief. Physicians who specialize in interventional radiology are experts in non-surgical techniques performed under image guidance. Image guidance means using radiology services like CT, ultrasound or fluoroscopy (a type of low-dose x-ray) during the procedure/treatment.

Some conditions that interventional radiology can treat include:

"Today many conditions that once required surgery can be treated less invasively by interventional radiologists. Interventional radiology treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery."
