What is a Radiologist?

A radiologist is a physician who specializes in interpreting images of the body to diagnose and treat medical conditions. In addition, a radiologist serves an important role in the care of patients by:

  • Acting as an expert medical imaging consultant to referring physicians, providing guidance in the appropriate imaging work-up of medical problems.
  • Correlating medical imaging findings with other exams and tests to make accurate diagnoses.
  • Recommending further scans or treatments when necessary.
  • Performing image-guided biopsies and other procedures.

After graduating from medical school, radiologists pass a licensing examination and complete a one year internship. They continue their education with four years of residency, followed by a one to two year fellowship (subspecialty training). Imaging subspecialties include body imaging, breast imaging, interventional radiology, musculoskeletal radiology and neuroradiology.

Our radiologists are board certified by the American Board of Radiology and have extensive training and expertise in medical imaging. They are dedicated to providing the highest level of quality imaging services to all patients and healthcare providers.

Fellow of the American College of Radiology
The American College of Radiology (ACR) is the principal organization of radiologists in the United States and serves as their professional society. Our radiologists are members of the ACR and our outpatient facilities are also accredited by the ACR.

Several of our radiologists have received the honor of Fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR). This honor recognizes members for exceptional achievement as a radiologist. FACRs are chosen based on a formal application and review process; only 10% of all ACR members have been awarded this honor.
