An Abbreviated Breast MRI is additional tool to screen for and diagnose breast cancers, and is used in conjunction with screening mammography. This screening exam is meant for women with a family history of breast cancer and/or those with dense breast tissue.
An Abbreviated Breast MRI is not covered by your insurance and is a self-pay exam. Your out-of-pocket cost for an Abbreviated Breast MRI with Suburban Imaging is $495.
An Abbreviated Breast MRI takes approximately 15 minutes.
You will be asked to change into a gown or scrubs. Jewelry, watches, hair clips and possibly dentures will need to be removed. All personal items will be kept in a secure locker outside of the MRI room. The technologist will give you headphones so you can listen to music during the exam-you may bring a favorite CD with you or listen to a radio statioin of your choice.
During the MRI, you will lie on your stomach on the scanning table. Your breasts are placed into a depression in the table, which contains coils that detect the magnetic signal. There is no pain associated with a breast MRI.
After an intial series of images have been taken, you will be given a contrast agent (gadolinium) intravenously (injection into a vein in your arm) to enhance the MRI images. Additional images are then taken.
Your images will be interpreted by one of our board-certified radiologists (physician). The findings will be reported to your healthcare provider who will then contact you to discuss the results.
